RSL Services & Citizens Club Nambour Inc. was recognised as an award winning venue at last week’s Rock n Roll themed event in Brisbane with over 1000 people from the Queensland Clubs industry attending the night. The Club’s Executive Chef Matthew Smyth received the top prize as Silver Chef of the Year and the Events and Function area was awarded first place for the second year in a row. Additionally, the Club was recognised as a finalist in no less than 5 other awards coming a close second against very stiff competition.

 Nambour RSL Club is no stranger to industry recognition with a solid list of awards throughout the years including being named Best Club Sunshine Coast several times and the Club’s Café Altro being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015 after winning Best Club Café several times.

‘These awards come at a pivotal time for the Club,’ General Manager, Suzanne Long explains. ‘We are starting to see our Function and Events business take off securing many corporate, special occasion and wedding events. It is not easy in a small hinterland town to drive a business to achieve state recognition, but proudly our staff were up for the challenge.’

She continues ‘Our staff are highly customer focused and put in their very best to ensure our members have a memorable experience with us,’ Proud of the teams efforts she adds, ’When you combine a bunch of great individuals you get an exceptional team.’

Exceptional was the theme for the night when the announcement for Silver Chef of the Year was made and Matthew Smyth reluctantly and humbly accepted his award. Matt has worked all over the world and has been with Nambour RSL Club for several years now. He is a consistent high performer in his profession and leads a diverse and dedicated team across the three dining options within the Club.

‘I could not be prouder of Matt and his team.’

Suzanne continues, ‘After the 2015 redevelopment the Club made a commitment to lift the standard, variety and style of our food offer. Food is a continually evolving business and customer’s needs have changed significantly since the days of RSL Club buffets. It was a risk that we felt we needed to take and has paid off in the form of happy customers and a successful business that continues to employ over 90 staff.’

‘We have created a benchmark, now recognised state-wide, that brings people together over the restaurant table. Matthew has been pivotal to delivering this change.’

The industry awards are open to all community clubs including Surf Clubs, Bowling Clubs, Leagues and RSL Clubs. 2018 saw over 50 Clubs enter.

‘Being recognised amongst high calibre competition is humbling,’ Suzanne admits.

Attending the gala awards event forms part of the reward for all staff who were recognised in the Club’s annual Staff Rewards Program.

Staff members of the year recipients, Ben and Raewyn, had a fantastic night of networking and fun at the awards ceremony. We wouldn’t be in the running for these awards if it were not for their hard work and dedication.’

Running a business in a hinterland community is not without its challenges.

‘We avoid focussing on barriers to success but the truth is we are a venue that is not located in a high density, high tourist area. Both of these awards certainly proves that if you deliver something exceptional to the community it will be utilised and it will also have the potential to drive trade to your door from outside of your immediate catchment.’
