Smart Pup on its way to Will

RSL Services & Citizens Club Nambour Inc. is proud to have assisted in securing a Smart Pup Assistance Dog for young William and his family. The Club provided a $5,000 donation through the Club’s Community Support Program earlier in the year to secure the pup.

Smart Pups is a Sunshine Coast organisation that specialises in training service dogs for children with special needs. Smart Pups grow special bonds with children and assist in reducing stress, providing comfort and improving the day-to-day lives of children and their family.

Having secured a Smart Pup for Will, guardians Angela and Ian Chippett are excited for Will’s future being that little bit brighter. Angela explains that Will was born prematurely at 24 weeks, 12 years on he now lives with complex disabilities that he faces bravely every day. The Chippetts look forward to seeing Will achieve more independence, coping skills, mobility and confidence as a result of his Smart Pup.

The special training required for any Smart Pup takes resources and time. Will’s Smart Pup will require at least 18 months of training at a cost of $20,000-$25,000.

For seven months Will’s guardians Angela and Ian worked tirelessly to raise almost $20,000 through community fundraising including sausage sizzles, trivia nights and collections. It was during this process that they connected with Nambour RSL Club.

When Will’s family first approached the Club, its community support committee knew that they had to do what they could to help.

Club General Manager Suzanne Long was inspired by Will’s story, “He’s a brave young man and like all children deserve every opportunity. We want to see Will succeed and having access to a Smart Pup will be of great assistance to him.”

With Nambour RSL Club’s injection of funds earlier this year the family has been able to secure a Smart Pup, training has commenced and Will is set to receive his Smart Pup later in 2018.

The Club hopes to maintain a close relationship with William and his family, pledging further funds to cover maintenance and vet bills.

‘Will visited the Club recently for his favourite lunch, spaghetti bolognaise and we will be seeing more of him during the pup’s practical training that will occur at the places William visits, including Nambour RSL Club’, said Ms Long.

Nambour RSL Club’s community support program assists the community through annual community grants, ongoing sponsorship agreements and monthly donations and has contributed over $3 million in to the community in recent years.

Nambour RSL Club is open 7 days from 10am, has free parking for members and a courtesy coach service.
