Organisations Band Together for Children with Challenges

Ask any parent and they will tell you that having children certainly comes with its challenges, some families however face greater challenges than others.

The Treehouse Initiative was established in September of 2013. The organisation provides support and counsel to families living with childhood special needs.  The Treehouse Initiative work for opportunities where parents and children can connect, share, learn and engage in sport, social and community activities.

The Treehouse Initiative together with the Nambour RSL Club and Nambour Little Athletics are set to provide Sunshine Coast families who have a child, or children, living with a challenge with an opportunity to participate in ‘Come & Try’ Little Athletics Clinic on Saturday 28 February from 10am at the Nambour Little Athletics track.

‘Come & Try’ Little Athletics for Children with Challenges presents a great opportunity for children, whose confidence may deter them from attending a sports day, the chance to play alongside other Little Athletics members in a fun and supportive environment.

Special guest Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, three time Olympian and the current Australian Record Holder in the 200m, will appear on the day for a meet and greet and special sprint clinic for the children taking part in the event.   There will also be a sausage sizzle for all participants.

President of Little Athletics Queensland, Tony Northey, will also be in attendance on the day to welcome special guest Melinda, the athletes and families.

Nambour Little Athletics Centre Manager, Rob Angus, said that their club was looking forward to hosting this special event and welcoming an Olympic champion on the day.

“Nambour Little Athletics have been hosting special events for children with challenges for about 15 years. It makes us very proud to be able to partner with The Treehouse Initiative and the Nambour RSL to provide this opportunity for these kids to experience Little Athletics.  To have an athletics legend like Melinda visit our small club and pass on some tips to our athletes is a huge bonus,” Mr Angus said.

Nambour RSL Club are proud to be the major sponsor of the day, General Manager Suzanne Long said the club was thrilled to be involved in such a worthwhile event.

“We are a community club that prides itself on supporting groups and events such as this and it is very rewarding to be able to assist in bringing this event together,” Ms Long said.

“It’s just great to see children benefiting from our community-support program and it’s a credit to the Treehouse Initiative and Nambour Little Athletics to create an event that is not about being the strongest or the fastest, it’s about bringing families and children of all abilities together to have fun”.
