Nambour RSL is Growing Nambour’s Future

The Nambour RSL Services and Citizens Club Inc, last night generously donated over $50,000 to 13 community groups as part of their annual Community Benefits Grants program. The recipients represented an enormous cross section of the Nambour and surrounding community covering sports, education, health and more. In recent years the Nambour RSL Club has injected more than $2.7 million into the region through sponsorships and grants.

RSL Services and Citizens Club Nambour General Manager Suzanne Long, President Len Bebbington along with members of the Nambour RSL Board of Directors, Management and honoured guest MP Mr Peter Wellington joined the 13 community groups receiving grants at the gala dinner event, hosted by Justin Vievers, now in its 9th year.

‘The Grants night forms just part of a larger year long community program that includes grants, sponsorships and donations. Our program is something we are very proud of. This year we did a tally of how many children are on the local sporting fields because of our financial and in kind support. The audit reveals over 1,600 kids. For that alone our program is worthwhile,’ Club General Manager Suzanne explains.

‘The Nambour RSL Club’s community program has the philosophy that if we work together and play together it is the community that profits. We live by this philosophy and have seen many local organisations continue thanks to our assistance. It is all about growing the future of our community.’

Community Clubs like Nambour RSL Club play a vital role in supporting and sustaining thriving communities.

‘The reality is that if community Clubs like ours didn’t exist then funding for a lot of yearly community activities would simply disappear. There were 44 applications this year totalling $178,000 in funding requests. Obviously a large number of groups had to be turned away. They are now out there seeking funding for events and activities that simply won’t happen if they don’t find a sponsor.’

This year’s funding included a donation of $5000 to Suncoast Christian Care. Prolific in the local community, Suncoast Christian Care assists the most disadvantaged members of our community through reducing food insecurity. Some of the many activities they do include low cost and free groceries through their community grocery store, ingredients for 16 schools for children who arrive at school having not eaten breakfast and have no lunch, running of a soup kitchen and much more. The grant from Nambour RSL Club is the final amount needed to secure a new Toyota Hilux vehicle to transport this much needed food.

Another recipient on the night was The Nambour Community Centre overseeing the annual community event Nambour Together now in its 3rd year. Nambour RSL Club is the events major sponsor. To be held on Sunday 30th July the day is a fantastic family day for both adults and children delivering stall holder events, competitions, displays of local art and craft, live music, local speakers and more. An initiative of over 10 businesses and community groups, the event is a great example of the community working together to achieve a day out to celebrate what Nambour and the surrounding hinterland has to offer.

Other groups who received a grant on the night were the Burnside State School P&C to fund much needed upgrades to appliances in the schools tuckshop. Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group for upgrades to the nursery they have set up and many more groups.

After many years of continuous and strong community engagement the Club enjoys a positive, strong leadership position in the community having donated close to $2.7 million dollars.

Additionally, Nambour RSL Club contributes over $3 million in state government tax annually. Of this amount approximately $260,000 is contributed to the local community via the governments community benefits levy, just recently announced.

The Club will continue its tradition of running the Community Grants program in 2018 with submissions now open, closing on the 31st March 2018.
