Nambour RSL Club Believes in Brekky for Best Start to the Day
RSL Services & Citizen’s Club Nambour Inc has joined forces with Scripture Union QLD in a unique sponsorship program that sees staff from the Club assisting local schools with their breakfast program. The program is run in these local schools by the school Chaplains and ensures that all school children have access to a complimentary breakfast once a week.
Enjoying breakfast before a big day is a common day to day activity we all try to do and some of us may take for granted. The benefit of breakfast not only provides us energy for the big day ahead, but plays a vital role in optimising our health. Unfortunately, not all children start the day off with breakfast. Coming to school hungry creates a scenario where a child will have little to no energy, and therefore find it difficult to focus, impacting their performance at school.
To combat this, Nambour RSL Club and Scripture Union QLD have teamed up alongside Chaplains from local schools; Nambour Special School, Nambour State School, and Burnside State College to support these schools with their current breakfast programs. Nambour RSL Club is providing staff as volunteers to assist with making and serving breakfast to the children once a month for the school term.
Club General Manager Suzanne Long believes strongly in the program, ‘We have a strong history of supporting Scripture Union and their activities within the community. The chaplains school breakfast program is a great initiative that our team were excited to get behind.’
Nambour RSL Club is an active community member investing $2.7million in recent years into the local community.
Suzanne continues, ‘Grass roots activities like this allow our staff to get involved with a more hands on approach.’
The Breakfast programs in the schools are run by each school Chaplain who in turn are part of Scripture Union QLD. Scripture Union QLD is a Christian not-for-profit organisation whose main mission is to provide support for children and young people to navigate life’s increasingly complex issues. With 100 camps, holiday programs and community outreach events each year, SU QLD work with hundreds of at-risk young people. On top of this, they too supply school chaplains – known as ‘Chappy’s’ – to provide social, emotional and spiritual support to more than 800 school communities across Queensland.
On August 21st 2017, Nambour RSL were proud to volunteer alongside Nambour State School Chaplain, Kelly Murphy – also known as Chappy Kel, in supplying pancakes to students so that they could start their day right.
Chappy Kel has witnessed first-hand the impact to children who fail to eat breakfast, explaining that students tend to be less focused, easily distracted and low in energy.
Chappy Kel further explains the importance of the breakfast program, “Breaky mornings create a caring and loving atmosphere where the students feel valued and encouraged.”
Nambour RSL Club will be back at Nambour State School volunteering on Monday 11th September, Nambour Special School in Term 4, and Burnside State School in Term 1 of 2018.
